In the search for your perfect new pair of mens leather gloves, I’m sure you’ve run across a few terms that perhaps made you scratch your head a little and say…huh?  There are terms for the tanning process used to transform hides and skins into leather, for the form in which the  leather material is sold to glove manufacturers, for the type of stitching used, and more.

Some of the most confusing terms, however, relate to the form or type of hide used to make the gloves. In general, leather is sold to glove makers in the following four forms:

FULL GRAIN

Grain is the outer or hair side of a hide or skin. When this outside original skin or hide has had the hair removed after tanning, but otherwise has not been altered, corrected or split (cutting leather into two or more layers), it is referred to as “full grain”.

  • INSULATION – when it comes to gloves, insulation works in two ways…first by trapping air and second by reflecting back the body’s radiant heat. Because leather is a natural material, it has outstanding insulation qualities. It’s very difficult for air to escape through leather’s dense fibrous structure, thus more air is trapped inside the glove. The more air that is trapped, the more efficient the insulation…which means more air available to be warmed by your body’s radiant heat to surround your hands inside the gloves. [The best type of leather material for insulation is grain deerskin.
